EIGEN Layer, an Ethereum restaking protocol, has reassured its community in a recent post that neither the platform’s infrastructure nor any on-chain protocols have been compromised since an investor lost about $6 million of tokens.

The incident happened on October 4 when the attacker integrated him into an e-mail exchange between the investor and the custodial service of EIGEN, and stole 1,673,645 EIGEN tokens.

According to the detailed account EIGEN team provided, the hacker was able to intercept the email exchange and then entice the investor to send the tokens to the wrong address.  The stolen tokens were then exchanged with cryptocurrencies on a decentralise swap platform for stabilised coins. The attacker then transferred the received proceeds to other centralized exchanges in an effort to conceal the tracks.

__EIGEN’S First Response and the Actions of the Relevant Authorities__
When the violation was identified, specialists from EIGEN Layer immediately began communicating with several exchanges and authorities. Some of it has been effectively frozen and efforts continue to be made to regain the rest of the loot. 

While admitting to the loss, EIGEN Layer has it that the attack was constrained to the investor’s email account and no other weaknesses were found in the protocols or smart contracts of the platform.

In its statement, EIGEN Layer stated strongly that the event had no linkage whatsoever with any vulnerability in its on-chain structure. The platform’s protocol remains intact, and there is no danger to token holders from the occurrence. The team also assured the community that there is corresponding action being undertaken to strengthen security protocols, especially with respect to interactions with investors.

As a result of the attack, the platform will tighten the measures to protect communication in order to avoid such actions in the future. The rest of the EIGEN community is unharmed though.

An Ethereum whale made a $131.72 million profit by buying Ethereum during the bear market in 2022 and HODLing it through rough conditions for over two years. 

According to recent data by Lookonchain, a wallet supposedly linked to an Eth whale bought 96,639 ETH on 3rd and 4th September, 2022. The whale had bought these coins from the cryptocurrency exchange, Coinbase.

The blockchain analytics firm referred to the investor as someone with diamond hands, which refers to a person who holds assets through periods of extreme volatility regardless of the price action and fluctuations. 

At the time when the whale made the purchase, Ethereum was trading at approximately $1,567. This resulted in the whale receiving $151.42 million worth of ETH. 

Recently, in March 2024, the whale moved over 72% of the investment to Kraken in multiple transactions. This constituted over 70,000 Ethereum coins. At that time, the price of each Ethereum was about $3,062. This means that the investor transferred almost $214.34 million in fiat. 

However, it’s still not over, because the whale is still currently holding 26,639 ETH in the original wallet from which the purchase was made. This is equivalent to $68.1 million based on the current pricing of $ETH.

BingX Secures User Assets Post-Breach
BingX’s technical team discovered an unusual network connection at around 4:00 AM and took necessary measures to prevent further loss. According to Vivien Lin, Chief Product Officer at BingX, the measures that the exchange undertook include asset relocation to a safer location and the halt of withdrawals until further notice. These measures were intended to prevent further unauthorized access and secure the user assets until the incident was analyzed.

However, Lin assured the public that the affected assets are a small portion of the exchange’s total reserves, and the specific sum being stolen is still being reckoned.

The incident was initially detected by blockchain analytics companies PeckShield and LookonChain, which pointed to seemingly fraudulent withdrawals exceeding $260,000. These reports demonstrate that the sector still remains vulnerable to cyber threats and various forms of attacks used by hackers.
